Stanford vs UCLA, UCD Matches

Congratulations to our competition team who fought hard this weekend in their first tri-meet againstUC Los Angeles and UC Davis. Stanford defeated UCLA with an overwhelming team score of 9-2, and narrowly lost to UCD by one point, 5-6. A special appreciation goes to Coach K and Coach Ghormley who coached the athletes, and a warm thanks to all the supporters who helped prepare and fire up the team.

Will Nguyen maintained quick footwork and neutralized his opponents from UCD and UCLA with punches. He was able to score with attacking round kicks and quick kicks from the clinch. In the end, he wasn’t able to defeat UCD and UCLA. Dylan Kim used his checks and motions to keep pressure on his opponent and used his defensive kicks to take on his opponent. He lost his one match to UCD. John Do was able to take the lead by the first round and increased the gap to win against his opponent from UCD. Max Kim, in his first match of the season, was aggressive with both his opponents from UCD and UCLA, scoring with attacking round kicks and using side steps against his taller opponents. He wasn’t able to close the lead and lost to both his opponents. Mohammed Elasmai matched his opponent from UCD kick-for-kick and was again able to score from well-timed, solid punches. By the third round, Mohammed was behind but was able to close the score, narrowly losing to his opponent from UCD by 1 point.

Haley Kong had an even match in the beginning with her opponent from UCD. She opened up the gap, scoring with inside kicks and doubles to the body and finished her match with a cut kick and back kick to the head to win by point gap. Joyce Chai, in her first match of the season, quickly gained the lead on her opponent from UCD in the first round with quick and precise defensive kicks, using her height advantage to keep her distance. A counter kick to the head and continued kicks to the body allowed her to win by point gap. Laura Malkiewich was able to quickly gain the lead on her opponent from UCD. She continued to overpower her opponent with combination kicks and speed throughout the match for the win. Sayuri Yapa, in her first match of the season, had an even match with her opponent from ULCA until the last round. After scoring with a punch and a fast kick to the body, she maintained the lead and closed the tri-meet with an exciting match and a win.

Berkeley Match Update

This weekend, our sparring team started out the season with a victory over our rival school UC Berkeley. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our team and congratulations to the coaches and team members. The score at the end of the day was Stanford 6-Berkeley 5, including walkovers.

Stanford Taekwondo was represented well by its team members. In their first match for the Stanford team, Will Nguyen and Dylan Kim fought against their opponents with heart to the end. Will was able to score with strong round kicks but lost the match after an intense third round. Dylan held his ground, closing the distance on his opponent and scoring with defensive kicks, but also lost to his opponent. John Do had an even match against Berkeley’s fighter until he scored from a fast kick to the head, where he was able to maintain the lead. Mohammed Elasmai was able to score an incredible 6 points from punches alone. His match ended in a narrow loss to his opponent. Max Kim had no opponents in his weight category.

Haley Kong, also in her first match for Stanford, gained a strong lead in the first round with combinations to the body and counter kicks to the head. She continued to widen the lead and won in the second round by a point gap. Laura Malkiewich had a close match with her opponent until a head kick put her in the lead. Laura was able to score with another head kick, winning the match and securing Stanford’s win against Berkeley. Joyce Chai and Sayuri Yapa had no opponents in their weight categories.
